The SSG has been hearing good things about Bitbucket.org's Academic License. It is being used in the CS in labs and for instruction. The unlimited license provides unlimited repositories, unlimited users, and 1GB of space per repository*.

Bitbucket's site covers both Git and Mercurial repositories, with wiki, issue tracking and pull requests.

*Repository size limits are:
  Soft limit of 1 GB – In-product and email notifications will give you a heads-up that you’re approaching the limit.
  Hard limit of 2 GB – Pushing to the repository will be disabled until you’re back under the limit.

Subversion

The Systems Support Group (SSG) strongly suggests avoiding the use of Subversion. Use of a Decentralized Version Control Systems (DVCS), such as Mercurial or Git is advised. The SSG is phasing out Subversion repositories in favor of the more modern and robust DVCS (Git and Mercurial), to be used in conjunction with services such as Bitbucket's Free Unlimited Academic License.


Decentralized version control systems  have many advantages over client-server based revision control systems. With DVCS users can work when not connected to the network, allowing private work to be done before publishing. DVCS avoid a single point of failure, are easy to maintain, and have good documentation.
